Our registrars reported for duty bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, signing in our guests and selling 50/50 tickets (Bill Furest isn’t here today, so everybody has a chance.)

President-elect Karan Bates-Gasior was conducting the meeting for President Larry Neal. At 12:15 precisely, she rang the bell. Her soft voice was no match for the room. No microphone to be had! After the Pledge of Allegiance and singing our national anthem, Beth Pryor led us in “The Four-Way Test” (and she didn't have to look at the banner.) Although, she did only say 1, 2, 3, and 4, leaving the group to recite the rest.

Valerie stumbled along with the blessing before lunch. Lunch today consisted of . . . you guessed it . . . chicken. Chicken Parmesan, roasted potatoes (more starch), potato salad, and Yay! Steamed broccoli. The salad is always good and for those with a sweet tooth, cakes and watermelon.

Ed Mastry conducted the music today from the seat of his pants. Songs included “I’m Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover.” Gary did a nice job of playing the song from memory ‘cause he had no leaves! And then “Roll Rotary” rather weakly (probably because we had NO SONG LEADER!)

Guests were introduced - Jason Uhlenhake, guest of Kelly Allen

Flowers for partner birthdays: Bob Lee’s wife Gail and Mari Jackson’s husband Garth. Wedding Anniversaries: Karan Bates-Gasior and Ron celebrating 29 years; Mark Zuccaro and Cathy celebrating 30 years. Club anniversary celebrated by Ted DeVantier 33 years. Lots of flowers were sold, I am sure, but to whom you might ask? Good question and yours is as good as mine.

A bit of sunshine is requested for Tom Davies who is in the hospital alongside his brother-in-law getting knee surgeries. Prayers are requested for Don Carnaghi’s niece. She had a double mastectomy.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
  • Soap Box Derby Saturday, September 8. Come socialize with us and other service club members.
  • Dick Pierson golf outing at Gowanie GC, Thursday, Sept. 20. Please sign up so we will know the numbers at least for lunch. Our meeting that day will be at the Gowanie club house. Our monthly Rotary dues pays for your lunch (guests for lunch $10) Golf and dinner is $100 pp.
  • Friday, October 12 $15 per person Art Center in Mount Clemens 6-8 p.m. (I’m sure this is Rotary function but that was never mentioned.)

Larry Neal picked Beth Pryor as Rotarian of the Week as reported by Karan. She read on to say that Beth always welcomes people with a smile and loquacious personality. Beth stood up to receive the accolade. Beth spoke about getting to know other Rotarians by sitting at different tables each week and you will be surprised at the responses of friendship you receive. Since she has gotten to know most everyone, she has been on vacation with some, dinner and house parties with others.

RECOGNITION WAS GAMELY DONE BY ERIC THE VIKING

He started in on Ed Mastry for not standing and leading the songs. $5. Rick Veihl $3 for coming to the Italian Cultural Center last week for the meeting instead of the Clinton Township library which was clearly announced at the last two meetings and printed in the last three newsletters. Ray Glime $5 for a picture of him and Gretchen at the Clinton Township Arboretum.

These Rotarians for going out of town: Bob Lee - Tobermory; Mary Ann Hosey - San Clemente CA; Ryan Murphy $4 - wedding near Boston Mass.; Beth Pryor $5 - East Lansing watching MSU football victory (Go Green!) Mike O'Connor, $5 for being most-missed Rotarian. People at his table thought he was someone new! Gloria Murray $2 for the announcement about the party at the Art Center failing to mention that it was a Rotarian function.

Our speaker today is our own Kelly Allen who let us in on current information regarding L’Anse Creuse school district. Kelly along with Jason Uhlenhake started a magazine in hopes it will enhance community feeling about the district. It will make sure other people are hearing us. These magazines will be put in doctors, dentists, and township offices for their patrons perusal. LC covers four different townships – Harrison, Macomb, Shelby and Clinton. They draw students from all these, plus school of choice from other cities. Did you know 80 percent of homes in Harrison Township do not have children of school age? Bottom line of re-branding is to put seats in the desks. The magazine prints various interesting student and teacher stories. They also have ads appearing on Facebook, the schools' website, and local papers. L’Anse Creuse is a generational school, meaning for many generations, families have been sending their kids to the L’Anse Creuse schools.

Jean Bodenhedt won 50/50 of $25.
