President Karan opened the meeting at our old digs, Zion Church, having Mayor Barb Dempsey lead us in the Pledge followed by a fine rendition on keyboard by Gary accompanying the national anthem. Without a banner in sight, the club was able to belt out “The Four-Way Test.” Pretty good considering the memories of some of us elder members. Tom Davies provided the invocation, thanking God for Julie and Jan in the kitchen.
PRESIDENTIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
- Wine and cheese party at the Anton Art center on October 4 to kick off the anticipation of the 100-year anniversary of the club.
-
- District dinner will be held at Fox Hills Golf Club on November 2.
-
- Karan turned the floor over to Julie Huttenlocher. She gave a brief history of the 62 years that Rotary met at Zion. It brought back great memories of some past and current members.

Two guests were introduced by Doc Ryan – Bill Hummelberger and Joe Garavaglia (also the new inductee to the club.)
Flowers were pinned on Eric Pierson for hitting the big 5-0. Spouse birthdays were honored for Keith Lesperance, Joe Garavaglia, Tom Sokol, Gerry Hanson (where have the two of you been?) And Korienna at the Salvation Army.
Margo Baker and Beth Pryor (hurry back, please) were pinned for club anniversaries.
The remaining five flowers were purchased by Gary for Julie in the kitchen, Bill Patterson for Jan in the kitchen, Val Miller for success in Barb Dempsey’s quest to win her upcoming mayoral election, Tom Davies for Nancy Dedenbach and Julie Miller for Gloria Murray for her success in getting over 90 attendees to the Anton Art center for the wine and cheese gig.
Due to no books, music was our old standby “R-O-T-A-R-Y.” We need to get Gary a keyboard like the one at Zion. What difference. Even the vocals sounded better.
NO SUNSHINE REPORT, NO GOOD WILL

ANNOUNCEMENTS
- Don Carnaghi, who has teamed with Chuck Dib, is handling the 50-50 raffle tickets for the 100-year anniversary. Cost is $100 per ticket with only 350 tickets being sold. Even if you win at the lower level, your ticket remains in the raffle for the big prize.
-
- Nancy Dedenbach is once again leading the way for the trunk or treat. Bring candy. It is such a well-attended event that takes place October 26.
-
- Karan’s quest to increase membership is working. We inducted three new members today. Joe Garavaglia was sponsored by Margo Baker, Doug Norris was sponsored by Elaine, and Dana (sorry didn’t get your last name) was sponsored by Jeff Furest. Each of the three new members gave us an interesting short bio.
RECOGNITION
Tom Davies captained recognition in fine fashion. Jeff Furest evidently can’t keep track of his phone, costing him $4. Don Carnaghi is headed to Cabo for 10 days, costing him 50 cents per day. Val paid 50 cents a day for four days in Banff. Doug Norris got off easy with $2 for an anticipated 28-day engagement trip with a three-carat diamond ring on the bride-to-be’s finger.
YMCA Steven got caught photographing and finger licking pasta bowls in the kitchen for $3. Gary should show up on time to play the piano, so it doesn’t cost him $3 next time. Bob Cannon paid $4 for a trip to the Netherlands. Bob Lee chipped in $3 for sauce on his shirt. Barb Dempsey paid $5 for her two sons’ success at winning the Dick Pierson classic, which was a really nice event.
PROGRAM
The program is a field trip to Rotary Park. Eric Pierson lead the group to the park to exhibit the condition of the park and what needs to be done to spruce it up. Renovation will include some work on the benches and tables. Some brick repair work and trimming up the greenery. Thanks to Eric for taking the point on this project.
50-50 was won by YMCA Steve $52. Be certain to tell your wife!
