Minutes by Sarah E. Lee
President Jeff Furest brought the first meeting of the new year to order at 12:15. Jessie Johnson led us in the Pledge; Larry Neal in “The Four-Way Test” and without Gary the pianist, we suffered our way singing the national anthem a cappella (or Acapulco).  Yours truly gave the invocation. Our meal was breaded baked chicken, mostaccioli, green beans (of course!), garden salad, rolls, and chocolate chip cookies for dessert.

FUNDRAISER OLD BUSINESS

Steve and Art Peters of Wertz Warriors were unable to attend the Beneficiaries Day when checks were distributed. They were given a check for $3,000 to help fund the Special Olympics.

PRESIDENT’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Jeff announced the election for the 2022-23 board will take place Thursday, January 27.  The final slate will be finalized at the next board meeting. He is still looking for the Immediate President-elect position, to fill the spot vacated by Steve Krankota. Kathleen Best has agreed to be the President Nominee. Also the board agreed to allow Dana Camphous-Peterson to run for a board position.
The 2022 fundraiser will be May 13 at Zuccaro’s. A committee is forming.

GUESTS AND VISITORS

Introduced by Eric Pierson, they were MaKaya Gardner of the YMCA, guest of the club; Steve and Art Peters of Wertz Warriors; Tom Welsh of the Portage Rotary Club and Susan Painter, fiancé of Doug Norris.

BIRTHDAYS, ETC.

For those Rotarians present, Larry Neal read off club anniversary for Stephanie Mirabile (5 years), wedding anniversaries for Eric Pierson, Ryan Murphy and Julie Huttenlocher. Doug bought a flower for his fiancé, Susan; Julie bought one for each for the Peter boys; Ken Steele for Tom, a potential new member and Jeff Furest for Kathleen Best.

MUSIC

A collective groan was heard when it was realized another a cappella attempt would have to be made. Ryan Murphy chose “God Bless America” and “R-o-t-a-r-y,” which some Rotarians claimed not to know the words.

SUNSHINE REPORTS

Larry Neal reported he spent Christmas Day and New Year’s in the hospital where he was diagnosed with A-Fib. He was grateful, however, as the doctors caught the condition.

RECOGNITION BY JULIE HUTTENLOCHER

Proving that an ill wind doesn’t blow someone some good, Julie fined everyone sitting at Larry’s table $1. She also fined her table mate, Sarah, $5, that could have gone for many things, but it was for Sarah’s forgetting the last words of the national anthem. Kathleen Best was fined $2 for making magic look real at the Christmas party. Glenn Burton was quoted in The Macomb Daily, which he admitted he just copied from the bulletin; Julie got his table for $1 each. Bob Cannon was fined $2 for being the Most Missed Rotarian, which he questioned, as he has his sub come in his place. Didn’t matter, pay up 2 bucks. Sam Wireman was fined $2 for advertising his business on his shirt. Eric Pierson gladly paid $5 for being a proud alum of Western Michigan that won a bowl game. Stephanie Mirabile also went to WMU and paid $4. Michigan State alums, Sarah and Mary Ann Hosey, paid fines for MSU’s bowl win. Since Julie is a UM alum, she declined to have the UM alums pay for the loss to Georgia. Groans from the crowd but the president pointed out the finer can do what he/she wants.

SPEAKER: SAM WIREMAN APEX CHIROPRACTIC

Sam joined Rotary last month. He had been looking for a service club that had a mission bigger than himself. He liked the purpose and goals of Rotary.

Sam comes from Quakertown, PA. He studied biology and chiropractic at Life University in Marietta, GA, graduating in 2017 with a doctorate in chiropractic. He chose this profession because he likes to fix things and help people. He worked in Atlanta, moved up north to Ann Arbor and finally to Shelby Township. His wife comes from a family of chiropractors and is one herself.  She is a native Michigander and that’s why Sam is living in Michigan.

Sam became frustrated at doing temporary fixes, adjustments that don’t realign and don’t solve the problem. He supports the school of structural correction. Here the spine is moved over by using specialized equipment.

Sam’s process is, first, do a consultation at no charge. Then he will evaluate, measure the area of concern, and then diagnose. Then he will create a customized treatment plan that will adjust the affected area and increase the range of motion with equipment that will realign the spine. The last step will be rehab.  Steve showed several examples of patients where this treatment plan had been used.

50-50

$45 won by Steve, who also drew the winning number.
