President Larry Neal rang the bell promptly at 12:15. Joe Casasanta led us in the Pledge. Jean led us in “The Four-Way Test.” Finally, Tom Davies delivered grace. In addition to the standard, yet fantastic salad, we had a wild rice and chicken cream soup to warm us up on a cold winter day. The main course was lemon chicken accompanied by green beans and an interesting presentation of potatoes. The potatoes were sliced into chips that were about 1/4" of thickness and were then grilled. They were good.

PRESIDENT TIME
  • Larry reminded us of the feather bowling event taking place at Bath City Bistro on Friday, January 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. Cost is $15 per person. RSVP to Gloria Murray at imgmurray@yahoo.com.
  •
  • The club would like to host an exchange student and anyone interested in hosting a student should let Larry know.
  •
  • The January 31 meeting will be a field trip to the Frederick V. Pankow Center.

GUESTS
Jeff Furest introduced our sole guest who also happened to be our speaker. It was Kara Fields from Macomb Community College.

FLOWERS
Flower duty was handled by Art Niederkohr. He first went to Bill Furest for his birthday. I won't say Bill's age, but he did make an $82 donation if that is any indication. Glenn Burton's better half Terri also celebrated a birthday. Valerie Miller received a flower in recognition of her and Dennis's anniversary. From here the flowers were sold quick and this scribe did what he could to keep up. Ellen Lysick bought a flower for Jean, Gary bought a flower for Ken Kish and Ray Glime bought a flower for Jan Davies. And some other flowers were sold.

SONGS
Music was led by Kelly Allen who selected “Let there be Peace on Earth” to start and then followed up with an energetic “R-O-T-A-R-Y.”

SUNSHINE REPORTS
  • Leading the sunshine report was Larry Neal reminded us of the memorial for Mira Green that will be held on Saturday, January 26 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Harold W. Vick Funeral Home, 140 South Main, Mount Clemens. Details and the full obituary can be found at:
  •
  • Tom Davies let us know that Jan fractured her ankle.

RECOGNITION
Tom Davies led recognition today starting with Valerie Miller and he fined somebody for something that had to do with her surgery, but I didn't get it all as my neighbors were distracting me; likewise with a fine that went to Bob Cannon. I did catch that Art Niederkohr was crowned today's most missed Rotarian even though he was just at a meeting a couple weeks ago. Paul Woodring was next recognized not for the fact that he looked so dapper, but for the fact that his fancy “get up” did not include a Rotary pin. was the next to be recognized for his fancy socks. I was just impressed Glenn was wearing socks at all. Finally, Kelly Allen was recognized, but I was once again distracted from the reason.

SPEAKER PRESENTATION
Larry Neal introduced our speaker today; it was Kara Fields, Director of Veteran & Military Services, for Macomb Community College. I honestly never realized such a department existed at the college and it made for a very interesting presentation for me. The department seeks to not only help vets succeed in school, but to navigate their way through all of the benefits that are available to them.

There are so many programs that it can have an overwhelming effect on the vets. Much of the presentation was a long story of a recent vet who visited Kara. He was homeless and down on his luck. He faced some additional challenges in that he was a National Guardsman and not regular service which limits the benefits available; furthermore, a previous drug conviction made him ineligible for food stamps. In less than a week, Kara was able to help him become food secure, employed and helped him get an apartment. He is now attending classes and has made tremendous strides.

Macomb has approximately 900 vets on campus who are assisted in some way by the department.

The 50/50 purse of $37 was won by Jeff Furest.
