Welcome to Rotary!

Perhaps it was the sultry weather that made the May 16 meeting so rowdy. Or maybe it was anticipation of our fundraiser the next evening. In any event, the meeting, called to order by President Neal at 12:15 p.m., began sedately. Sam D'Angelo led us in The Pledge; piano man Gary in the national anthem; and Julie Huttenlocher gave the invocation. Who else but Steve Krankota, who now owns this job, led us in “The Four-Way Test?” Today's menu was pork tenderloin in mushroom sauce, fabulous crunchy roast potatoes, the usual GB (green beans), mixed green salad, rolls and cake.

PRESIDENT'S ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • President Larry asked fundraiser chair Chuck Dib and his committee to stand for a round of applause. He especially praised Chuck, as president nominee, for taking on a job that formerly went to the president-elect, a welcome change President Larry made last fall. Chuck was speechless to describe his gratitude and support from his committee.
  •
  • May 23, next week's meeting will have Karan Bates-Gasior preparing for our new Rotary year (starts July 1) with a committee sign-up/roundtable meeting.
  •
  • May 30 meeting's speakers will be Dave Zimmerman, former Rotarian, and Ted DeVantier on the history of Camp Rotary (your scribe remembers going there as a child to toboggan).
  •
  • Our president's party will be June 13 at Camp Rotary.  Please RSVP to Julie Huttenlocher. Julie will have a sign-up sheet next week. She is inviting a lot of past presidents.

GUESTS AND VISITORS

Steve Krankota announced our two guests: Ron Dedenbach, Nancy's husband, and Merrilee Conger, guest of Kris Howell.

BIRTHDAYS, ANNIVERSARIES AND FLOWERS

Julie H. sold the flowers. First, the birthday boy, Dave Meldrum, to whom we sang Happy Birthday. Then, wedding anniversary for Frank Bernabei and partner birthdays for Gretchen Glime and Larry Moloney. Club anniversary three years for Art Niederkohr.

Then the sales began. Ken Steele brought two flowers, one for Julie and one for her father, Tom Davies. Kris Howell bought a flower for Chuck for agreeing to her fundraiser idea; Steve Krankota for Ryan Murphy; Gary for Julie H. and Sam for Gary.

Then all hell broke loose with Bill Furest buying a flower for Glenn Burton (as punishment?) because Glenn didn't know the difference between a walleye and a pickerel.

Two frustrated thespians then got into a mock fight and agreed to call Paul Harris – stay with me now – for the answer. At first Paul didn't answer and then he called back, sounding very much like the absent Jeff Furest, saying he was having a great time with Phil Groh, Bob Baker, Bill Lee and other departed Rotarians. In the end your scribe didn't get the answer owing to the hubbub this distraction caused.

SUNSHINE REPORTS

  • We were glad to hear that Tom Davies is out of the hospital and recuperating at home.  Rumor is we might see him next week.
  •
  • Sadly, Chuck O'Grady isn't doing well, as reported by Bill Furest.  Chuck is in Shelby Crossing.

MUSIC

Kelly Allen chose "I'm Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover" which we sang quite well. Rotary song was, guess what, “R-O-T-A-R-Y.”  President Larry suggested we sing it backward which a few Rotarians attempted to do and quite well.

RECOGNITION BY NANCY DEDENBACH

Nancy started out strong and ruthless. Five dollar fine each to Bill Furest and Glenn Burton for hijacking the meeting. Poor Ted DeVantier was nicked $5 as bulletin writer last week because he described chicken piccata as "chicken in gravy with peas," mistaking capers for peas. Karan was fined $2 because a Turning Point retirement, in the news, wasn't Karan retiring to be our next president. Then Nancy devised a quiz for each table to answer who was born on this day.  Steve, $5, for not knowing the correct answer was the YMCA founder. Sam D'Angelo shot his mouth off and got a $1 fine.  Next table failed and fined $4. The remaining tables all failed and fined $4, $3, and $2.

SPEAKER - Scott Chabot, senior project engineer, Anderson, Eckstein and Westrick, and Rotarian

Creating Green Infrastructure:  Scott was originally presenting with Rotarian Mary Bednar as this was her baby. She was called away last minute and Scott agreed to fly solo. Redoing parking lots seem a mundane, ho-hum subject.  Except for stormwater. It's not absorbed by concrete. So, it flows where it's often not wanted. Some years ago, Clinton Township had to do something about their aging, crumbling civic center parking lot. ACW presented the options: do nothing, do a full replacement or do a green infrastructure replacement.  The township chose the latter, stashed the money away in their budget and emerged with an attractive parking lot where the stormwater can be treated by the choice of plantings and other improvements.

50/50

Don Carnaghi was the winner of $27.
