The meeting was called to order at 12:15 p.m. Ken Steele led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthem. After, he led us again in “The Four-Way Test.”

Our prayer was given by Sarah Lee and lunch followed. Today, we enjoyed beef tips, rice, broccoli and Caesar salad.

Our guests were announced by Valerie Miller. Today, Zachary Lambert and Jasmine Hunley were honored guests as recipients of the Donald Torline Memorial Scholarship. We also had Carol Torline, Don’s wife, and Shelly Schmidt, Don’s daughter, representing the Torline family. Craig and Mary Lambert were also in attendance. Jeanette Douglas was also a guest of Gary Felts.

The only club business of the day was the announcement of our newest member . . . Julian Anthony Wireman. Born on Saturday, May 30. Mom, Dad and Baby are all doing well. Congratulations Wireman family!

RECOGNITION

Tom Davies started by recognizing Sam Sengupta for being the bulletin writer last week. He missed a couple items and Tom got him … recognized each one. This bulletin writer is trying very hard to stay out of those crosshairs!

Julie Huttenlocher was fined $3 for her son’s wedding. Tom threw in $5 as well for it was his grandson’s wedding!

Tom Welsh was recognized for looking so good in his pink shorts. Tom also got him for a stain on his shirt sleeve … not sure how that happened!

Gary Felts was recognized in hope of finishing out his total paycheck. Tom felt bad so he recognized Jeannette. Hopefully Gary will pick up the $2!

And finally, Tom sold back Glenn Burton his putter cover for a whopping $4!

PROGRAM

Today we recognized our two recipients for the Don Torline Memorial Scholarship Fund.  To start things off, Shelley, Don’s daughter, stood and gave a little history of Don and his passion for education.

Following his tour in Vietnam, Don came back and chose to continue his education. After working in the business field for years, he went back to school and earned his masters in education and began teaching high school. Eventually he ended up at Baker College, which is where we met him.

OUR TWO RECIPIENTS:

Zachary Lambert:

  • Graduate of Dakota High School
  • Accepted at University of Michigan, undertaking a degree in Economics and then plans to continue his education to get his law degree
  • Currently interning at the Macomb County Prosecuting office.
  • Going to use the scholarship to help pay with his tuition. He is very excited to earn his law degree and help give back to his community.

Jasmine Hunley

  • Graduate of International Academy of Macomb
  • Sophomore at the University of Detroit Mercy. Majoring in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
  • Youth delegate at the United Nations 2025 and 3-year National Delegate
  • She too will be using her scholarship to help with tuition as it has been on the rise.

Congratulations to both of these bright students!  We are so happy we could help them out!

The meeting ended with Rotarians reminiscing about what an amazing person Don Torline was. He was a true gentleman, who loved the students at Baker College and always worked for the betterment of our community. He is missed by us all!
