Steve Krankota, our incoming president, called the meeting to order saying “Welcome to the second episode of the Steve-covers-for-President Jeff-Reality Show.” Then he started the meeting with a kid’s joke fresh from the YMCA classroom. “I am afraid for the calendar on the wall, its days are numbered.”

Jessie Johnson led the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthem. Paul Woodring led “The Four-Way Test” and Tom Davies provided the prayer. He asked for blessings for Paul Woodring as he leaves us, and for support for the Carnaghi family during this difficult time.

Today’s entree: broiled chicken, pasta with tomato sauce, GREEN BEANS, salad and dinner rolls. Dessert came later in the form a celebratory cake for member Paul Woodring.

Steve Krankota announced that our speaker today was a no-show and Larry Neal would be stepping in on short notice. Steve also thanked all who helped or attended the 100-Year Gala last weekend. It was a beautiful event and a great cause to celebrate the wonderful history of our club.

Ed Mastry introduced one guest, Jeri Hunley, who is on track to be a new member.

Then past president Val took the microphone to pay tribute to Paul Woodring. Paul, a member for 33 years has announced his retirement from the club. Paul has been a dear friend and a great Rotarian. Paul has stayed committed to the club, regularly attending in spite of a 70-mile round trip from his home. Paul had a few words of thanks too, saying he was 91 years old and still feeling great. He just thought it was time to slow down a bit. He loves the club and misses Clinton Township where he lived and worked for many years. We will miss you Paul, take care and visit us again soon.

Steve K. joked that Paul would be available after the meeting to sign autographs.

Amanda Oparka announce the birthdays: Glenn Burton, not present, Melissa Pierson (Eric). Steve Krankota got a flower for his 4th club anniversary.

Seven flowers were up for grabs. Mary Ann Hosey bought the first one for Paul Woodring, Doc Murphy for Larry for stepping in as speaker, Val for Steve K. for his initiation into club presidency, Jessie J. for Stephanie and Val, her two rocks during difficult times, and Gary Felts for Ken Steele and Ed Mastry, in appreciation for setting up his piano each week.
Mary Ann Hosey led the songs today. First, for good luck to Paul Woodring, we sang “I’m Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover,” then “All Hail to Rotary.”

Steve K. was pleased to introduce a new member, Barbara Owen. Barbara and her husband are ministers with the Salvation Army in Mount Clemens, having just arrived in June. Kim Jarvis read the Rotary introduction and Scott Chabot did the honors, pinning on the Rotary pin. Welcome Barbara! It’s great to have you as a member and to have the Salvation Army represented in our club.

Don Carnaghi stood and expressed his appreciation for the love and support he and family received following the death of his son. He was deeply touched by the presence of many members at the visitation and funeral.

On a separate note he informed us that Wesner Tuxedo gave a check for $340 to the club. This was a forgotten deal struck during the original event planning to give back $5 for every tux rented. A great gesture on their part and a nice surprise.

SUNSHINE REPORTS

Jessie Jackson asked that we keep Beth Pryor in our prayers. Beth has had a couple of medical setbacks after an illness, then a fall.

Tom Davies mentioned that a former member, Julius Stone, passed away in Florida. He was 102.

Then on to Recognition by Tom Davies:

Gary Felts paid $1 for a few extra notes during the anthem.

Tom asked Paul Woodring to stand. Paul said “Take your last shot!” After a few kind words there was just the ceremonial fine of $1. Gary Felts paid the fine for him.

Val was fined for carting off extra food, a couple bucks for three lunches. Then Jeri Hunley (a guest!) was fined $2 also for carting off food. Karan, paid for enjoying her cake, $2 for two fingers. Ellen Lysik paid $4 for her expensive taste in cars. Tom mentioned a Mercedes 300, and a new Porsche Panamera.

Tom fined himself $2 for a trip; he’s just back from Africa. Larry Neal paid a buck for stepping to the front of the dinner line, “I’m the speaker." he complained.

Scott Chabot paid $2 for unsuccessfully alerting members of meeting responsibilities.

Speaker and recognition were no shows. The bulletin writer was a sub today.

Jessie Johnson was called on regarding her flower purchase for Stephanie and Val. They each were charged a couple bucks for providing unlicensed counseling services.

Sarah Lee was singled out for upcoming surgery. No fine just best wishes.

Larry Neal filled in the program slot today by giving us an update on the new Macomb Township Library.  Construction and landscape work are winding up and there is an official opening set for September 19.

Larry was prepared with a picture presentation of the progress, everything from broken concrete, porta-johns, phragmites, a six-inch gas line for the emergency generator, and more. It is really a beautiful building.

Fun facts: The dome is covered with 1,024 hand fitted copper pieces. Many beech trees that had to cleared for construction were processed at a local mill and returned to be used on interior trim. A grant from the DIA has been awarded for a signature art project, possibly a large mural made of individually contributed pictures.

Larry has been totally involved in the project from start to finish. A great accomplishment and contribution to our network of libraries.
