As always, President Larry Neal rang the bell to start our meeting at exactly 12:15. Kelly Allen led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthem with Gary on the recently purchased piano. Steve Krankota started us off on a robust rendition of “The Four-Way Test.” Bride-to-be Sarah Lee gave the prayer, mentioning the photo of a dog on the video screen and the fact that she was filling in for Tom Davies, who was on his way to Hawaii.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
  • Larry's presidential announcements included thanks to Sam D'Angelo and Sarah for attending the district conference and receiving a grant for $2,500 for Turning Point.
  •
  • He also mentioned Nancy Dedenbach for organizing the recent euchre event and the fact that she personally donated $100 and also thanked all those who are working on the upcoming Santa Parade.

  • We are seeking donations of bags of candy for our Interact members to pass out on November 17 at the Mount Clemens Santa Parade. Many stores have Halloween candy available for deep discounts, please bring a bag or two to our November 15 meeting.

  • We have also agreed to join Oakland University and the City of Mount Clemens in their food drive for the Macomb Food Program. We are seeking donations of nonperishable, non-expired food items. Bring items to our November 15 meeting and help us help a neighbor in need.
  •
  • Details from the last board of directors meeting included accepting the resignations of Ed Mastry and Rob Sogge, Sam leading our archive collections for the club's anniversary celebration and a work in progress of updating the club's bylaws.
  •
  • Ryan Murphy introduced the only guest Kevin Kelly, a former club member, Rotary staffer and the guest speaker.

Our lunch included tossed salad, rolls, chicken (and later sausages), green beans and roasted potatoes. Cake was there for dessert.

Julie Miller was the flower child. Birthdays for Ted DeVantier and Jean Bodenstedt; partner birthday for Carey Furest; wedding anniversary for Keith and Johnna Lesperance; club anniversary for Larry Neal. Ted, Bill Furest and Larry Neal were present to accept flowers. And, of course, we sang "Happy Birthday" for Ted. Julie quickly sold flowers: Val Miller for Nancy, Julie Huttenlocher for Julie Miller; Ellen Lysik for Sam; Ray Glime for Mary Ann Hosey; Chuck Dib for Ken Steele.

Ted DeVantier was the song leader, and because it was only two days past the midterm elections, he first selected
"Side-by-Side.”

Bill Furest, under sunshine reports, said he and Carey recently had dinner with Chuck and Carol O'Grady. Former member Chuck is now 92 years young and still enjoying a couple of Dewars with dinner.

Val also announced that the newly former Rotaract Club is up to 38 members and the youngsters will take over the Salvation Army bell-ringing this year.

RECOGNITION

Eric Pierson, filling in for Bill Patterson on recognition, immediately fined Chicken-Man Bill and Kris Howell for missing their duties.
He got everyone who did not attend the card party for $1 and all those sitting with Kevin Kelly $1. Mary Ann paid $3 for something (not sure what) and Sarah paid $2 for putting a few jokes into her pre-dinner prayer. Aaron Meadow was hit for $1 for best-dressed as was Beth Pryor for a cell phone call. Fast-moving Eric then fined everyone who had recently gone or was planning an out-of-state trip. It was well timed: Mary Ann for New York, Glenn Burton for Florida (to attend a sailing Hall of Fame event), Frank Marella for Boston, Art Niederkohr for Indiana, Ryan Murphy for New York. Ken Steele and Bill 1st were also fined for upcoming hunting trips, although Bill said he wasn't taking a gun or a bow, maybe a few beers.

SPEAKER/PROGRAM

Our speaker was Kevin Kelly, the Rotary's major gifts officer for a Midwest region that includes Michigan, Ohio, New York and southern Ontario. That covers more than 600 clubs, one that meets in the bowling alley, some that offer alcohol and one that has only 11 members. (Four or five of our members were drinking wine during the meeting.) But that small 11-member club in Pennsylvania included a member who donated $5 million to the Rotary Foundation.

Kevin noted that the Rotary Foundation has received the top “Four-Star” rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks the services of nonprofits. It's the 11th year for Rotary has been honored.

Kevin went over the many advantages and ways to donate to the Foundation and how its "annual fund share" provides that 50 percent of all donations come back to the districts for grants.

Endowments to Rotary can also be made with specific selections for the funds. Those allowed are: saving mothers and children, education, disease fighting, clean water, growing local economies and promoting peace.

If you need any information on donating funds or about Foundation rules you may contact Kevin.Kelly@Rotary.org.

The 50/50, worth $34, was won by Glenn Burton, who told Kevin he would donate it to the Rotary Foundation.
