WELCOME TO ROTARY!

President Valerie Miller called the Mount Clemens Rotary Club to order at 12:15 p.m.

Paul Woodring led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Beth Pryor led the club in “The Four-Way Test.” Tom Davies gave the benediction.

The day's menu featured a sit-down lunch of roast beef, green beans and carrots, roasted potatoes and cookies.

President Valerie Miller recognized several club members exemplifying "people of action" including:

  • Karan Bates-Gasior who wrote and receiving District Grant Funding for Rotary Park.
  •
  • Ed Mastry who noticed that our banners were a bit worn and took it upon himself to purchase new ones.
  •
  • Ken Steele who comes early and leaves late to set up our meeting and sell 50/50 tickets as well.

Amanda Oparka welcomed guests speaker Doug Kaherl and Bruce Erikson, guest of Glenn Burton.

Ryan Murphy sold flowers to Bob Lee for his sister Sarah, to Glenn for his guest, to Larry for Tom Davies for being his virtual bartender, to Beth for Doug Kaherl, to Julie for Karan, to Val for Beth, to Beth for Val, to Ryan for Ken and to Steve for Ed for taking his place on the Rotary Club Board (as Steve is now the President Nominee).

There was no singing to keep everyone's aerosol droplets to themselves.

  • Ryan Murphy was recognized with a perfect attendance certificate.
  •
  • There's still time to sign up for the Dick Pierson Golf Outing on September 17. You can come for lunch (this will be in lieu of our regular meeting) but we need to know.
  •
  • The wine and cheese social event at the Anton Art Center has been canceled.
  •
  • We will have an exclusive tour of the Discovery Center on October 22 from 6-8 p.m. There will be no regular meeting that week. It will include dinner and a tour.
  •
  • Steve Krankota noted that the YMCA is creating learning centers at several locations in the Metro Detroit area (although not the Macomb Family Y).

The esteemed Tom Davies raised funds for the greater good by nailing Steve Krankota $2 for the non-Rotary YMCA promo. Larry Neal got decked $3.80 rounded to $4 for an invisible newspaper article about the placement of the 38,500-pound dome on the new library building in Macomb Township. Doug Kaherl was fined as a most missed former Rotarian $2. Siblings Bob and Sarah were each fined $5 for a "cottages for Canadians" business opportunity. Beth Pryor was also missed, $3. Glenn Burton was deemed "most missed" but got away with a $1. Julie Huttenlocher's two sons are both at Albion in frat houses but are in look-down for three days as fecal samples tested positive for COVID-19, which then resulted in a family discussion about a special word not to be uttered at the meeting with Julie offering increased payments not to mention "the word.”

President Valerie Miller introduced speaker Doug Kaherl who was a member of the Mount Clemens Rotary from 1976 to 1996 and president from 1990-91. He was also the District Youth Exchange Coordinator for six years. Doug is an associate pastor at his church and has become very interested in travel to Israel with its amazing history, biblical significance, beautiful countryside, and incredible monuments, buildings and artifacts. He provided about 25 highlights of places and things to see around the country. Examples included: Mt. Carmel, Cove of Parables, Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, Tel Dan Nature Reserve, Banias Nature Preserve, Golan Heights, Gideon Springs, Bet She'an National Park, Qumran, Dead Sea, Garden of Gethsemane, Garden Tomb, Dome of the Rock and Valley Elah. He will be taking another group to Israel in 2022 with the hope of having his favorite guide Yehuda. The cost will be about $4,000 with most items included other than airfare.

The Dedenbach Family winning spree continued with Kelly winning $42 in the 50/50.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 p.m.
