The Pledge of Allegiance started the meeting promptly at 12:15 p.m.
Junior Rotarian Luca Dedenbach asked Rotarians to join with her reciting “The Four-Way Test.”
President Valerie Miller began with thanking the wait staff for everything they have done making us comfortable at Aspen. Next week we return to Italian American Century Club for our regular meetings. Also let us know that John Kelly’s (corporate member) wife recently passed away.

She reiterated how our club is a club of action for the few people we have coming to our meetings. Jesse and Julie brought the Macomb County Foster Parent Program before us and we Rotarians stepped up and donated hundreds of dollars in gifts and cash for their cause. Also during COVID-19, our club gave away $70,000 in cash to our various charities thanks in part, to the efforts of Jeff Furest and Don Carnaghi and our whole club.
Valerie welcomed our newest Rotarian Kim Jarvis.
Tom Davies said grace before the lunch, which consisted of ribs, French fries, and bread. (No veggies makes me miss the green beans from Italian American Century Club.)
Doug Norris welcomed our only guest Dan Lepo, our speaker from Clinton Township Arboretum.
No one was present today who was celebrating anything!
Flower sales went this way: Stephanie for Jesse, Don for golf outing partner, Mark, and missed Mary Ann, Ray Glime for Mary Vender, Scott Chabot and speaker Dan Lepo. (They waited for me to buy one for Luca but she squealed on me to Tom Davies for recognition so I didn’t.)
GOODWILL/SUNSHINE
Ray Glime mentioned Gretchen just had watchman surgery (heart implant for possible stroke victims.)
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Valerie reminded us October 22 we will have a night meeting in downtown Mount Clemens at the Discovery Center, 6 to 9 p.m., spouses invited. Also, the euchre party is set for November 5.
RECOGNITION
Tom started with me $3 for dying the bottom back of Luca’s hair blue (but it came out green.) Jesse and Julie for their names and photos in the paper three times $3 each. Most missed male Rotarian, Ray Glime $2 and most missed female Rotarian Mary Ann Hosey. Karan Bates-Gasior bought a photo of herself $3. Tom asked Paul Woodring what famous person celebrated his birthday today. After three tries he guessed right – Jimmy Carter. Scott Chabot got Carter’s age correct at 96. Scott then tattled on himself for $5 fine for misspeaking the name of the committee calling it the Conservation Committee instead of the Arboretum Committee our speaker is talking about today. Tom had stolen Ed Mastry’s pen and sold it back to him for $3. Everyone with no Rotary pins on today got fined $1.
SPEAKER TODAY DAN LEPO REPRESENTING
THE CLINTON TOWNSHIP ARBORETUM
He is here to ask Rotary to sponsor a northern red oak tree
for Don Green’s lifetime achievements. Cost is $500.
The Arboretum is located in Clinton Township between Romeo Plank, Canal, and at the east end of 18 Mile Road. It began in 2007 with the work and influence of Don Green, Ray Glime, Carl Becker (three Rotarians) and Jim Hungerford. The arboretum only plants genotype Michigan native trees.
They have planted over 70 Michigan native genotype trees now in the Arboretum. The difference between just a Michigan native tree and a genotype Michigan native tree is the seed. Some trees that are native to Michigan are grown in Michigan but from seeds from different states. The genotypes are the Michigan active trees from the Michigan seed. Their attempt to have a wonderful park full of Michigan native genotype trees that they hope will one day be the largest collection. It is a great walking or bike riding park, especially with the fall colors.
Ed Mastry won the 50/50 = $44.
