Julie Huttenlocher started us off with the Pledge of Allegiance.
Paul Woodring led us in “The Four-Way Test.”
Sarah Lee said the invocation.
While we waited for our lunch to be served, (due to COVID, our lunch was not buffet style) Bob Cannon introduced our luncheon guests: Kathleen Beth and Kim Borja. He then broke COVID protocol by having us sing our welcome to Rotary song. The way in which we sang it was probably better we didn’t!
Doug Norris, (the guy getting a love bump by way of a special Canadian compassion entry to visit his lovely fiancée), sold the flowers.

BUBBLY BOB LEE JUMPED IN FOR RECOGNITION
Not using his most ingenious mindset, he recognized our President’s enthusiasm and fined Jeff Furest to match that enthusiasm (I think).
He fined everyone at the table Mary Ann Hosey was at because he missed her while she was away due to her surgery. (This is about the 3rd week in a row Mary Ann, or her tablemates were fined due to her absence over a month ago!) (Good thing she will be in Florida next week or we might get hit again!) ps. Bring $$ if you sit near her at October 22 meeting.
Rotarians sitting at the same table of our replacement speaker paid $1
(Wasn’t she sitting at same table Mary Ann was?) maybe not . . .
Tom Davies was fined for poor performance last week at recognition because his daughter Julie said so. Table was also fined $1 each.
Paul Woodring’s table was fined for his being such a nice guy.

OUR SPEAKER KARAN BATES-GASIOR FROM TURNING POINT
She tried to show a view videos of interviews with survivors. What we were able to see was heart rendering. The internet pooped out after about 5 minutes so Karan had to fall back on her speaking skills.
In 1978 two women began a quest to help and support women who have been physically, sexually and even verbally abused when a few battered wives were murdered by their spouses. They first sheltered them at the Grace Episcopal Church. Turning Point’s Shelter house is still in Mount Clemens with 52 beds.
Offices are in Warren, St. Clair Shores, Romeo and Mount Clemens. Their services are basically in Macomb County. Budget of $4 million. $3 million comes thru several grants and monies from the Crime Act. $1 million comes from donations, bequeaths, and events like the 5K virtual walk next week. ($25 pp).
1 in 4 women are victims of physical, verbal, or sexual abuse, 1 in 7 men.
The crisis line handles 10,000 calls a year. Calls for help because of domestic violence have risen due to COVID whereas sexual assaults have gone down.
The offices also handle Personal Protection Orders and act as legal advocates.
The average stay for a woman and/or her children is about 6 weeks. In the past after the shelter stay, the victims were put back out on the street most times with no where to go. Turning Point just received a grant for transitional housing, job training, interview skills, etc. to help the woman get back into the workforce.
Turning Point has been going into the high schools for a 2 days health class, teaching young people about healthy relationships. No one else in Macomb County is offering this.
A new group called SART of nurses, doctors, lawyers and judges has been formed to give counsel to domestic violence victims.
Steve Krankota won the 50/50
Kim Borja was there to thank us for our donations for their foster children program.
