President Larry Neal was back and started the meeting promptly at 12:15 with the microphone! Bob Cannon was there and led us in the Pledge (before he ate and ran!) Bill Patterson said the invocation even before the recitation of “The Four-Way Test!” Then Sam D’Angelo led us loud and proud through “The Four-Way Test.”
Larry reminded us of a secondary meaning of “The Four-Way . . .” First for lunch are guests, second is the president, third is the pianist, and fourth is everybody else.
LUNCH
The Italian Cultural Center could write a book on the MANY different ways to serve chicken! Today lunch started with delicious hors d’oeuvres, roasted red peppers, artichokes, hot peppers, black and green olives. Roasted potatoes, green beans (the go-to veggie) chicken Marsala, salad and a pink cake for dessert.
PRESIDENT’S ANNOUNCEMENTS
He thanked yours truly for the wonderful job she did representing Rotary at the Soap Box Derby. (She absolutely could not have done it without the help of Julie Miller!) Also in attendance at the derby was Ed (Rotary sign) Mastry, Karan (tent, chairs) Bates-Gasior, Art Niederkohr, Ken Steele, and of course, Luca Dedenbach.
BOARD MEETING
Thanks went out to Valerie Miller for hosting the board meeting on club island. (Many of us wanted to attend the board meeting but the boat left before anyone could get there and most can’t swim that far.)
Things discussed at board meeting:
- 1. We need Rotarian participation at Mount Clemens Community Summit, Saturday October 6, 9 a.m.-noon at Emerald Theater. It’s free but registration is required.
- 2. Approved 6 month leave of absence for McLaren Macomb.
- 3. Approved draft of standard club constitution.
- 4. confirmed $340 expenditure for banners. 5. Approved $30 for Nancy to spend for hospitality at our pit stop (of which there was no need because Ron Dedenbach donated the pop and beer and Julie and Karan brought treats.)
- 6. Approved $99 for Dropbox subscription for online storage per Don Carnaghi’s request so we can easily store and share photos from club events.
- 7. Approved Gloria’s proposal for our Christmas party December 13 at Gowanie G.C.
- 8. Approved formation of a new (didn’t know we had an old one) Interact Club at the International Academy of Macomb.
- 9. A first review of an update to the club’s bylaws.
The meeting ended with a drunken stupor and everyone going skinny dipping in the lake. (Not really, I made that part up).
* * *
NO MEETING HERE NEXT WEEK. IT WILL BE AT GOWANIE GOLF COURSE ON SOUTH RIVER ROAD AT NOON JUST BEFORE THE GOLF OUTING.
* * *
Karan Bates-Gasior will be running the meeting Sept. 27 and October 4 while our president is vacationing out of the country (No not Trump . . . Larry Neal.)
Guests and visitors by Patty Kaufman of which there were none.
BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES
Larry and Chuck celebrating their wedding anniversary.
Dave Meldrum celebrating 41 years. (Club anniversary, not age. Anyone can see he doesn’t look a day under 75! Even not wearing glasses you can see that.)
FLOWERS
Patty for Val, Sam for Larry, Eric for Joe, Ed for Julie Miller, Gary (pianist) for Ed, Kris for Patty, Patty bought another one for me!
MUSIC
Ed Mastry tried again today.... “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” (we REALLY need to learn) followed by “Sing a Song to Rotary,” (which we didn’t do any better!) Ed did stand to attempt to lead us. I was fortunate enough to sit by two songbirds, Mary Ann Hosey and Kris Howell.
SUNSHINE REPORT
Julie Huttenlocher said her dad Tom Davies is doing fine after his surgery but poor Jan is nursing not only Tom but also his brother-in-law.
Bill Furest mentioned his daughter-in-law who fell and broke her back and had it glued back together!
ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK: SAM D’ANGELO
Sam impressed upon us all the support our president needs in all his endeavors.
INTERACT CLUB
Valerie Miller reported on the Interact club.
The Rotary supported her grandchildren at RYLA. The leadership skills they learned prompted her niece to start an Interact club at her school. Kudos to Val and her niece for their efforts! Perhaps now we will be in line for a Rotary Presidential Citation!
Dave Meldrum was quick in dealing out $1 fines per incident. Ed Mastry -- bad music and Rotary sign snafu at Soap Box Derby; Eric Pierson for attending Ford Field Monday night; the Lions showed up, but didn’t play; Stephanie Shelters, Greece for two weeks; Steve Krankota for a $12,000 windfall for the YMCA from the golf outing.
Then he started with a MC Rotary quiz table by table --
First president of MC Rotary? Wm. Quackenbush (no one guessed it.)
Current Rotary International President? Karan answered correctly and saved our table with Barry Rasman.
Where is next year’s International convention? Table answered correctly: Hamburg, Germany.
Chuck Dib answered correct to what kind of car our president drives. BMW.
SPEAKER/PROGRAM
Our own president-elect Karan was our speaker today all about Turning Point. She elaborated on all the services they provide:
Community Advocacy Program, counseling department, crisis line, emergency shelter with 52 beds, first response advocacy, forensic nurse examiner program, legal advocacy, Macomb County Domestic Violence Council, personal protection orders, prevention education, and the store Second Hand Rose.
It stimulated much interest and there were a host of questions. She left pamphlets around on all tables for us to take home and peruse through.
Dave Meldrum won 50/50 of $37.
