President Larry Neal called our weekly Rotary Luncheon to order at 12:15 on a beautiful Thursday in Macomb County. Paul Woodring very enthusiastically started us with The Pledge followed by the always-thoughtful and well-said benediction by Tom Davies. Frank Bernabei and our newest member tag-teamed “The Four-Way Test” before we lined up for a less-than-normal, but still delicious lunch, consisting of a pulled pork sandwich on a lovely brioche bun, baked beans, asparagus (that's right Rotarians, I said asparagus), salad, potato salad and chocolate cake.

FLOWERS
Julie Miller coerced Ken Steele into doing flowers today and the club members did him no favors with no club birthdays or anniversaries in attendance.

Ken had his work cut out for him but with Karan's help, he was able to unload all the flowers thanks to Ellen Lysik for her two guests, Glenn for his fellow Grosse Pointer Liz, Dori for the sweet Gloria Murray's introduction to Rotary, Ken Steel for Julie Miller's strong arm tactics, Paul Woodring for Ken Kish for his all-around goodness and Larry for Frank and Dori's teamwork on “The Four-Way Test.”
Mary Ann Hosey's musical stylings consisted of a standing rendition of “God Bless America” in honor of election day coming up and “Roll Rotary!” Great job Mary Ann and Gary on the piano.

SUNSHINE REPORT
Sheree Patterson was the subject of today's Sunshine Report with a very sudden and very serious back issue, let's keep Sheree and Bill in our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.
Valerie shared some good will in the form of her grandson's baseball team becoming state champs recently moving on to the regionals in Indiana! Congrats to the boys from St. Clair and to the traveling super fan Val.
Larry's Rotarian of the Week was Ellen Lysik who expressed her gratitude for being a member of our club for a year now and what a great year it's been for Ellen getting to know everyone and the welcoming feeling she has gotten from our members. Larry gave us some of his insight in working with Ellen on last year's fundraiser and what a can-do, no-nonsense attitude she has and a great asset to Mount Clemens Rotary. Thank you, Ellen, for sharing and enhancing our club.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES
Art had an announcement regarding our effort in collecting school supplies for the children in need at Turning Point and Karan added the biggest need is for backpacks. But all supplies are welcome including pencils, erasers, markers, glue, etc.

RECOGNITION
Art was also in charge of recognition and started in on Valerie for not being able to host our next board meeting on the boat. She has a good reason which still cost her $4.99. Frank Bernabei was looking very well today but dressed a little more casual than usual which surprised Art to the tune of $3. Sam was charged $4.99 for his “line of bull” and Stephanie Mirabile was fined for the third time for her trip to Jordan also $4.99. Art's Lion's trivia did not raise as much money as expected with some great guesses from the members to questions like when was the Lions first year? Their last playoff win? How many Hall of Famers? When was the first Thanksgiving Day game? Last division title? And what coach had the most wins? You'll have to Google the answers if you were not in attendance.

SPEAKER
Ellen Lysik introduced her long-time friend and Dentist, Dr. Tom Karas. A graduate of The U of D Dental School and a practicing dentist in St. Clair Shores for the past 38 years, Dr. Karas proceeded to give us a riveting talk on his many years of research into stress and stress management. He explained to us that stress comes from our brain's internal alarm system or the amygdala and that there are innate stressors that none of us have any control over. The very dynamic Dr. Karas taught us some practical techniques to help manage our stress using math skills and explained how to try and increase our pre-frontal cortex or PFC activity and decrease the amygdala activity. The reverse causes higher levels of stress and more rash decisions because we all know we don't think as clearly and make as good decision when stressed. Thank you for this great talk and for visiting our club Dr. Karas.
50/50
Our 50/50 winner of $22 was one of our guests Barbara Theeke.
President Larry adjourned the meeting at 1:34
Happy Birthday!
