Welcome to Rotary!

On a sunny, cool day – the first meeting of September – President Karan Bates-Gasior called the unruly crowd to order at 12:15 p.m. All tables were filled! Mashell Carissimi led the Pledge of Allegiance. We sang the national anthem and recited “The Four-Way Test” matching Steve Krankota's energy. A very tanned, healthy Tom Davies gave the invocation. We feasted on chicken pot pie, vegetable soup, Caesar salad, green beans, rolls and cake.

PRESIDENT'S ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Karan encouraged all to attend the upcoming Rotary Summit on Saturday, September 14, in Ann Arbor. She gave notice that we will vote on a dues increase and bylaw changes next week, September 12. Please note there will be no luncheon meeting at IACS on September 26 as the golf outing takes its place.

GUESTS AND VISITORS

Introduced by Chuck Dib. I did not pick up the guest sheet so here are my notes: Chuck introduced his wife, Dr. Leslie Orzech, DMD, our speaker, and Ed Mastry. I did not get the names of Margo Baker's guest and Kris Howell's guest.

BIRTHDAYS ANNIVERSARIES

Announced by Patty Kaufman. No birthdays. One partner birthday: Bob Lee's wife Gail. One wedding anniversary: Mashell and Jim Carissimi. (Larry Hagar was on the list, but he just got married last Friday.)

After that, a flower-bidding frenzy: Robert Lee for his sister, Sarah Lee, for giving him her premium Fisher seat tickets for “CATS”; Chuck Dib to Larry Neal for hosting the board meeting; Julie Miller to Ed Mastry, for coming back to Rotary. Val also gifted Ed a flower. Kris Howell bought a flower for her guest.

MUSIC

Ken Steele chose “God Bless America” and “Roll Rotary,” accompanied by the Patterson Spoon Quartet.

SUNSHINE REPORTS

Jeff Furest said his wife's best friend is having serious health issues.

NEW MEMBER INDUCTION

Stephanie Mirabile, sponsored by Sarah Lee, became a regular member, after attending two years as a corporate member. Stephanie has served on the fundraiser committee and often assists Valerie with attendance reports, etc.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Eric Pierson has finalized the price for the golf outing named after his father. It will be $100, down from $100ish. Sign-ups on the tables. Fundraiser Committee has been hard at work, Jeff said, putting together the Party of The Century. The ticket price has been set at $200 and Rotarians may make monthly payments. He also announced that Mashell Carissimi will lead the sponsorships committee with assistance from Sarah Lee.
  •
  • Gloria Murphy reminded us the Kickoff to Party of the Century at Anton Art Center on Friday, October 4, 6-9 p.m.
  •
  • Euchre party at Madison's on November 7, arranged by Nancy Dedenbach. Nancy was roped into handling the Trunk or Treat event.
  •
  • Lastly, the soapbox derby, is this Saturday, September 7. Ryan Murphy's daughter will drive the Rotary soapbox.

RECOGNITION BY RYAN MURPHY

It was Ryan's first time doing recognition and he asked us to be nice. Hah! The man is a pro. Eric Pierson, $4, on his lack of followup as recognition chairperson; Nancy Dedenbach, $2, for being clueless about trunk or treat; Jeff Furest, $5, paying in advance for his European trip; and Ed Mastry's table (included yours truly) for his coming back to Rotary. Ryan dared to recognize the Recognition Champ, Tom Davies, for being rusty with the invocation, $5; Ken Hagar for getting married last Friday, didn't get the amount; and Stephanie Mirabile for her trips to Jordan, $3. "This is fun," were Ryan's final words. More to come, I'm sure. Stay tuned.

SPEAKER, DR. LESLIE ORZECH, DMD, ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY: MORE THAN JUST TEETH STUFF.

Introduced by her husband, Rotarian Chuck Dib. We learned a lot about oral surgery from Dr. Leslie's informative presentation, starting with how did she decide to be an oral surgeon?  For the answer we go back to 12-year-old Leslie working for her dad in his construction business. Picking up scrap metal turned into working with power tools. Aha! She loved those power tools. Why not take over Dad's business? No. Working outside in all weather and having to use a porta-potty were turnoffs. Her dream was using those power tools in a climate-controlled room with an indoor bathroom. Voila. An oral surgeon was born. And they do more than just remove wisdom teeth!

If your face is smashed into pieces, then you're going to visit Leslie. If you were a FLK (funny-looking kid) with an unusual chin, Leslie can reconfigure your jaw.
Changing teeth impacts a person's life.

Other interesting things we learned:
·    Don't have implants done overseas to save money.
·    If you still have wisdom teeth in your 40s, consult a board-certified oral surgeon.
·    Only go to board-certified oral surgeons.
·    Models can be made from scans of patients' heads to figure out best approach.
·    The sinuses act as air bags to the brain.
·    Don't let a sore tooth fester! Tooth infections still kill people every year.

Dr. Leslie closed her presentation with a picture of her two-year-old daughter wearing safety glasses and holding a toy power tool!
