President-Elect Scott Chabot called the meeting to order at 12:15 p.m. Mary Ann Hosey led us in the Pledge and the national anthem. Dr. Sam covered “The Four-Way Test.” Sarah gave the invocation, ending with a moment of silence for the passing of Don Torline. Our menu today included loaded vegetable pasta soup, rolls, pasta, green beans, breaded chicken, Caesar salad, and chocolate cake.

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS

Scott announced the funeral arrangements for Don Torline. Visitation will be January 24 at Sharp Funeral Home (6063 Fenton Road, Flint 48507) followed by the funeral service on January 25. It was Don’s wish that a scholarship fund be established to award higher education scholarships to worthy individuals.
Accordingly, Don’s family with the Mount Clemens Rotary Foundation have created The Don Torline Mount Clemens Rotary Scholarship Fund. The family will fund the scholarship with a generous five-figure contribution and solicit donations from long-time friends, colleagues, and community leaders.

Val Miller, president of our Foundation, has requested nominations for beneficiaries for the 2022 Fundraiser. Please submit your nominations by the end of January.

RECOGNITION BY JULIE HUTTENLOCHER

Julie complimented Dr. Sam Fireman that his booty shorts story last week gave Julie such a smile and a lift to her spirits all week. She fined the two Rotarians sitting next to him $2. Next, Julie stated she hated to fine hardworking Rotarians who make sure the meeting is set up each week BUT she did anyway. Ed Mastry was brought to task for a missing mayonnaise jar used for the 50/50 tickets as well as not setting up the standing banners. However, Julie, to be fair, gave him a chance to work off his fine. Once again, we have the “Three Truths and a Lie.” Kathleen Best, Kim Jarvis and Larry Neal supplied the material. Ed missed them all. $3 fine. Kathleen was fined $5 for her beautifully presented trip on Instagram. Lastly, Bob Lee was fined $4.99 for acting out, while singing, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

SPEAKER - SUSAN BURKHARDT, VICE PRESIDENT, MEDSTAR — MEDSTAR’S SHOCK AND SAVE FOUNDATION

Medstar is an ambulance service that was created in 1993 by two hospitals, Mount Clemens General (Now McLaren) and the original St. Joseph’s Hospital. It has now grown to be the largest 911 EMS provider.
In August 2021, Medstar created the Shock and Save Foundation.  Its mission is to provide automated external defibrillators (AED) to as many locations possible, as well as teaching people to be comfortable using the machine. It has been found that cardiac survival rate doubles when AEDs are used, as opposed to CPR. Therefore, the foundation hopes to put AEDs in parks, malls, churches, schools – anywhere there is high foot traffic. To learn more about this program, go to www.medstarambulance.org/aed.

From Bob Lee:
Don Torline was the Mount Clemens Rotary Club president after my year as president. He was not scheduled to be president, as he had already been president of the Port Huron club a few years before. When it was announced at a board meeting that the man scheduled to be my successor had to leave the club, Don Torline immediately said he would take over as replacement. The board immediately accepted his offer.
That was the kind of man Don was - always generous and kind. He loved doing things in a big way. He was enthusiastic. He was proud to be a Rotarian. I will miss him.
