Minutes by Sarah Lee

On a beautiful spring day, President Valerie Miller called our third meeting IN A ROW to order at 12:15 p.m.  Kim Jarvis led us in the Pledge. Harry Walker, an Eastpointe Rotarian, did “The Four-Way Test.” Sarah spoke the prayer.

The IACS gave us a marvelous lunch: green salad dressed with ranch, crusty hot rolls, roast beef, oven-roasted potatoes, green beans, and white cake with white frosting. You also had the choice of Coke products and wine from the bar. We were living high!

PRESIDENT’S PARTY

Valerie is getting her President’s party!  It will be in lieu of a meeting, on Thursday, May 13, at Sun Sport Marina (30000 Metro Parkway, Harrison Township), west of Lake St. Clair Metro Park (Metro Beach to you old-timers.) The space is a large garage that can open its doors to bring in lots of fresh air. Nautical theme naturally.  Val loves a party.  Hopefully, all Rotarians will help her celebrate what she calls, “her first and last party as president.”

PARTY OF THE CENTURY 2.0 FUNDRAISER MEETINGS START APRIL 8 AT 10:30 A.M.

Volunteers are needed to sign up for committee chairs and assistants. Sign-up sheets were distributed and are attached to this bulletin. We have four short months to put the 2.0 party together.  While the basic structure is in place, there are many areas and items that need club members to participate and support.  Start thinking where you would like to volunteer, then complete the assignment(s) you want and return all three sheets to Jeff, as indicated, by scanning or email. Following his instructions helps Jeff, who has done the major lifting on this project. The least we can do is follow through with his paperwork request. The first meeting will be Thursday, April 8 at 10:30 at IACS.

ROTARY WORLDWIDE WATER DAY PROJECT

Jessica Johnson’s innovative envelope board raised $640.

GUESTS & VISITORS

Our speaker, Jeff Luzius and Harry Walker, Rotarian. We are now singing a cappella our unique welcoming song.

FLOWERS

No birthdays or other events. Ray Glime was mistakenly called as a guest which accounts for his two “sympathy” flowers from Eric Pierson and Paul Woodring.

Here is the rest of the flower purchases:
Sarah for her new house by Valerie; Ken Steele by Ed Mastry; Julie Huttenlocher and Jeff Luzius by Larry Neal; and Harry Walker by Ray Glime.

SUNSHINE

Larry Neal, by request of Bob Cannon, gave the funeral information for Clinton Township police chief Fred Posavetz.

GOODWILL

Sarah Lee gleefully reported that she and her husband were finally able to purchase a house. The house is in Clinton Township and awfully close to her next move: Resurrection Cemetery. Her brother pointed out she is also contributing big time to the tax base of Clinton Township, to which she noticed a big smile on Larry Neal’s face.

RECOGNITION

Paul Woodring was clueless when asked what month March represented, even after Sarah whispered him the answer.  Women’s History Month! He paid $5 and all the men in the room paid $1. Sarah was then fined $5 for giving the answer away, for her new home and all the good things in life she has received. Wow.  Good thing her dad years ago set the fine limit at $4.99. Next up, Julie was fined $5 – not for UM making it to the Sweet 16 in the playoffs but for “hosing” everyone last week to contribute to the water project. Ed Mastry has made so many $5 and $10 faux pas, all for a dollar apiece.  Again, the $4.99 limit applied to him.  Next, Eric Pierson was fine $5 for carrying a weapon. We thought it was a sidearm, after the active shooter situations in Atlanta and Boulder. No, it was a knife. Hardly worth a fine. But he paid $5.   Then all those, whose previous fines had not been maxed out, had to pony up a dollar if they had received the vaccine – this was in honor of – and, here, a long story I didn’t get but having to do with the death of the first lady Rotarian in an obscure town somewhere in the U.S., who was related to Glenn.

GUEST SPEAKER JEFF LUZIUS MACOMB COUNTY VETERAN NAVIGATOR

Introduced by Larry Neal, Jeff Luzius is an Air Force veteran and a former academic librarian. Now he gets to combine the two areas of his life in his new job: veteran navigator.
Veteran navigators help veterans, and their families, connect to benefits and resources available to them from the government. It is true that vets are not good at reaching out for help. We say, “Thank you for your service,” but they don’t expect anything in return. The program is open to any veteran, regardless of discharge or length of service, even if it was one day. There are 26 navigators located throughout the state.
